As most people already know, LaVeyan Satanism is strictly atheistic, they do not believe in the Abrahamic variation of Satan, or any literal figure, although most will ask, is it then a religion? The answer is yes and no, some individuals may recognise this as an actual philosophy or lifestyle rather than religion; But Satanism enters said realm through aesthetics, metaphors, rituals, and symbolism. Anton LaVey uses the symbol of human awareness, empowerment and being unapologetic for your carnal desires, it represents the raw natural human state; Intelligently, Passionately, and Carnal.
The term Satan originates from the Hebrew word 'śāṭān (שָׂטָן)' meaning 'accuser' or 'adversary', in it's early use it was not an evil entity but a challenger, someone who questioned, this term later evolved over time into a personified figure of opposition to Abrahamic faiths and others, but the root term remains; One who obstructs, challenges, and confronts. Anton chose Satan as an emblem and Archetype, it captured the human condition in its full potential; Reason, Desire, Doubt, Strength and Self-Direction. Satan is the perfect metaphor for a philosophy that affirms life in the here and now rather than a complete ego dissolution and submission to spiritual promises. The main reasoning on this worldview is to embrace carnal desire, where many religions condemn the flesh, Satanists embrace and celebrate it, our physical instincts such as pleasure, lust, hunger, anger and joy are what makes us human. To deny them is to deny life itself, Satanism teaches that we are not animals that should be tamed through guilt, but we should engage in responsible indulgence. This bringing to the table self-responsibility, one of the most necessary values as a human, they do not shift our blame onto supernatural forces, fate or divine punishment, they know we are the reason of what happens. Satanists recognise our actions as our own, and our consequences as ours to bear, we are free to shape our lives, define our morality, and be free in our life.
To claim to be a Satanist is to claim bodily autonomy, ownership of the self, and be bold with carnal desires, we are not evil, we are a strength of will, and we do not fear nature, we embrace it as we are part of nature.
